Early June in Utah County feels like summer has officially arrived. Temperatures climbed into the 90s this past week, parks and trails are getting busier, and community calendars are filling up with festivals, concerts, and family events. Around the county, people are settling into a new routine built around longer days and warmer evenings.

This week brings everything from a new community resource in Orem and a standout production at The Ruth to a surprising catch in Utah Lake and another reminder of how quickly dry conditions can turn into wildfire season. Alongside those stories, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside, support local events, and enjoy the first full stretch of summer.

The Big Story

Goodwill’s first Utah County store opens in Orem

Goodwill has officially opened its first location in Utah County, bringing one of the nonprofit’s largest thrift stores to Center Street in Orem. The 26,000‑square‑foot store includes a drive‑through donation center and a community room, and it marks the 10th Goodwill site in the state. Shoppers find gently used clothing, furniture, books and household goods on a retail floor that changes daily as new donations arrive, while the drive‑through drop‑off keeps usable items out of landfills.

Beyond bargain hunting, the store offers something deeper: revenue from sales funds employment assistance, disability services and early‑intervention programs in Utah, Idaho and other Rocky Mountain states. The Orem location is expected to provide workforce development training to more than 500 people a year and host classes and workshops aimed at helping people with barriers to employment gain new skills. The store’s presence also reduces waste by extending the life of clothing and household goods.

Utah County’s rapid growth has fueled demand for services that combine sustainability with community support. By pairing a robust thrift store with job training and social services, Goodwill’s new Orem location could become both a shopping destination and a resource hub for residents. The size of the project and its comprehensive mission set it apart from typical retail openings, signalling continued investment in the county’s workforce and environmental stewardship.

Quick Hits

A big splash of life at The Ruth

The Ruth’s latest production, Once on This Island, transports audiences to a Caribbean‑inspired world filled with tropical scents, real sand and water, and a cast made up entirely of performers of color. Reviewers say the rarely performed musical is one of the best pieces of theater seen on a Utah stage; the ensemble’s singing and dancing bring the island gods and characters to life.

Rare fish in Utah Lake

A Provo couple reeled in a one‑in‑a‑million albino catfish from Utah Lake. Rare due to a genetic disorder and vulnerability to predators, the white fish created a stir on social media before being released back into the water. Wildlife officials say such catches are extremely uncommon.

Target shooting sparks a brush fire

A small group of target shooters near Saratoga Springs ignited a brush fire that quickly spread through dry grass. Fire officials say the shooters reported the blaze themselves, helping crews contain it to under five acres. Saratoga Springs Fire Chief Kenny Johnson noted that roughly 80% of recent fires in the city have been caused by target shooting and reminded residents that shooting is illegal within city limits.
